Kane's new Bayern deal is 'just going to take a few days', says club chief Dreesen; nothing is signed yet

Sky Sports reported on 16 October that Harry Kane had agreed in principle to stay until 2029. Two weeks on, Bayern's chief executive says the details are being worked out. The club has announced nothing.

Harry Kane’s new contract at Bayern Munich is close but not done. That is the plain summary of two weeks of reports, and it is worth being exact about which parts are confirmed and which are not, because the headline “Kane signs” has not yet been written by the club.

What is confirmed

Bayern are negotiating a new contract with Kane, and the club says so. Chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen told the German newspaper Bild this week, in remarks carried by the Bundesliga’s official website on Thursday 29 October: “We’re working out the details right now. That’s just going to take a few days.”

Kane has said he wants to stay. During the October international break he said talks were “going well” and that the two sides were “pretty close”, according to the same Bundesliga report. “There are still a few things we need to sort out,” he said. “I’m happy here. I think it won’t be long before there’s some kind of announcement.”

His current contract is the four-year deal he signed when he joined from Tottenham in the summer of 2023, so it runs to the summer of 2027. That means this is the last season in which Bayern can extend it before Kane could, from January, talk freely to clubs abroad about a move at the end of the season. The club has not published any extension.

What is reported

Sky Sports reporter Michael Bridge reported on Friday 16 October, in a piece Sky marked as exclusive, that Kane had agreed a deal in principle to stay at Bayern until the summer of 2029, and that the club was “finalising the paperwork.” A deal in principle means the main terms are agreed but the contract is not signed. Bridge wrote that there were “just a few things to iron out before confirmation.” Sky did not report the salary or other terms.

Two weeks later Dreesen’s “a few days” line matches that account, but it also shows the paperwork has taken longer than the first report suggested. We have found no report from a named outlet saying the deal has stalled, and no public reason for the delay. Until Bayern publish something, the honest status is: agreed in outline, according to Sky Sports; being finalised, according to the club; not signed.

Why it matters

Kane is 33, and Bridge noted that Bayern do not usually offer new deals to players of that age. The numbers explain why they are making an exception. According to Sky Sports, Kane has scored 154 goals in 156 games since joining Bayern, and last season he set a club record of 55 goals in all competitions, breaking the mark held by Robert Lewandowski. He has been the Bundesliga’s top scorer in each of his three seasons in Germany, something no other player has managed in his first three seasons there, according to the Bundesliga’s site, and he won this year’s Ballon d’Or, the annual award for the world’s best player, the first Bundesliga player to do so in 30 years.

A contract to 2029 would take Kane to 36. For Bayern it keeps their main goalscorer through two more Champions League campaigns. For Kane, by his own account, it keeps his family in Munich, where Bridge says they are settled.

What happens next

Kane did not play in Bayern’s 6-1 cup win over Magdeburg on Tuesday, when he was an unused substitute, and the Bundesliga site expects him to start against Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena at 18:30 CET on Saturday. If the club wanted a moment to announce a contract, a home game against Dortmund would be one. But that is our observation, not a report. Bayern have said “a few days.” We will write the confirmed story when the club publishes it.
