The Champions League comes back on Tuesday 3 and Wednesday 4 November with matchday 4, the fourth of eight rounds in what UEFA calls the league phase. If you grew up with groups of four, the single table of 36 clubs can look like a spreadsheet that fell over. This guide is for people who want to know what the table means, what each result changes, and why Inter and Manchester United are sitting next to each other in 20th place.

How the league phase works

There are no groups any more. All 36 clubs sit in one table. Each club plays eight different opponents, four at home and four away, and never plays the same team twice in this phase. The opponents are decided by a draw in which the 36 clubs are split into four pots of nine based on their recent results in Europe and at home, and every club draws two teams from each pot, one at home and one away. Manchester City’s own guide to the competition sets this out plainly, and UEFA’s season page gives the dates.

A win is worth three points, a draw one, a defeat none, exactly as in a domestic league. After eight games the table is final, and it decides three things:

The top eight go straight into the round of 16, the last 16 clubs left in the competition, which is played over two legs on 9 and 10 March and 16 and 17 March 2027.

Clubs finishing ninth to 24th go into a play-off round, two-legged ties played on 16 and 17 February and 23 and 24 February 2027. The eight winners join the top eight in the round of 16; the eight losers go out.

Clubs finishing 25th to 36th are out of the Champions League after eight games.

So 24 of the 36 keep going, and the prize for finishing in the top eight is a month off in February and no extra two games. For a club that is also chasing a domestic title, that rest is worth a great deal, which is why big clubs care about the difference between eighth and ninth, and not only about staying in the top 24.

Where everyone stands after three games

The table below is from the licensed data feed used across this site, as it stood on Friday 30 October, before any matchday 4 game. Goal difference is goals scored minus goals conceded, and it is the first thing used to separate clubs on the same points.

Five clubs have won all three games: PSG, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Real Madrid and Real Betis. PSG are top only because their goal difference matches Villa’s and the feed lists them first. Stuttgart and Arsenal are the two unbeaten clubs with a draw. Barcelona hold the eighth and last automatic place on six points, but Como, Manchester City, Club Brugge, Sporting and Dortmund all have six as well, so the line between eighth and 13th is drawn by goal difference alone.

Bayern Munich are 14th on five points without losing, because two of their three games were draws. Below them, the surprise is how many big names sit in the play-off zone or worse. Atlético Madrid are 16th on four. Inter and Manchester United share 20th on three points each, both with one win and two defeats. Napoli are 22nd. Porto, who have won this competition twice, are 34th with no points at all.

What a win on matchday 4 changes

A club on nine points that wins again reaches 12 from a possible 12 and, with four games left, is in a strong position for the top eight with four games left. A club on three points that wins reaches six and is back among the crowd fighting for the top eight. A club on three that loses stays on three with four games left, and the arithmetic turns against it, because the maximum it could finish on is 15 and the clubs around it keep collecting points.

That is why some of Tuesday and Wednesday’s games matter more than the names suggest. Manchester United host Roma on Tuesday at 21:00 CET with both sides below the top 16. Inter go to Feyenoord the same night, 20th against 26th. On Wednesday Porto play Napoli at 21:00 CET, 34th against 22nd, a game one of them badly needs to win. Lille, on no points, are at Bodø/Glimt in northern Norway on Tuesday.

Times come from the fixture feed used across this site and can still change. The game of the round for the top of the table is Barcelona v Aston Villa: eighth against second, and a chance for Villa to go four games from four. Atlético v Bayern pits 16th against 14th, two clubs who expected to be higher. Dortmund v Betis is 13th against fifth.

In short

Thirty-six clubs, eight games each, one table. The top eight skip straight to March. Ninth to 24th play two extra games in February to get there. The bottom 12 go home in January. After three rounds, five clubs have a perfect nine points, Barcelona hold eighth on goal difference, and Inter, Manchester United and Napoli are all on three points with work to do. Matchday 4 starts on Tuesday at 18:45 CET.
